Ukrainian Police Nab Hacker in Crypto Mining Bust

Ukrainian authorities have arrested a hacker accused of hijacking a hosting provider’s servers to illegally mine cryptocurrency, police said. The suspect, a resident of Poltava in central Ukraine, had allegedly been engaging in cyberattacks since at least 2018.

According to law enforcement, the individual exploited access to server infrastructure to install unauthorized mining software, diverting computing resources to generate digital currency for personal gain. The operation reportedly compromised numerous systems, though officials have not disclosed the specific hosting firm or the amount of cryptocurrency mined.

The arrest underscores Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime, which has surged in the region amid increased digital activity. Investigators did not release the suspect’s name but confirmed the individual remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges could follow. Ukrainian police continue to collaborate with cybersecurity experts to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the illicit operation.
