UK Faces EU Pressure Over Data Adequacy Standards

European Digital Rights (EDRi), alongside its members Open Rights Group and Privacy International, has called on the European Commission to reconsider its stance on the United Kingdom’s data adequacy status. The civil society organizations argue that the UK should not have its data adequacy decisions renewed without implementing substantial reforms to its data protection regime.

The groups claim that the UK’s current approach prioritizes deregulation under the guise of simplification, potentially undermining the safeguards established under EU law. They warn that re-adopting adequacy without addressing these issues could weaken the level of protection afforded to personal data transferred between the EU and the UK.

Data adequacy decisions allow for the free flow of personal data from the European Economic Area to third countries deemed to have equivalent privacy protections. EDRi and its partners are urging the Commission to ensure that any future decision reflects a commitment to strong and enforceable data rights.
