Tymoshchuk Indicted in Global Ransomware Crackdown

U.S. prosecutors unsealed a superseding indictment in Brooklyn federal court against a Ukrainian national accused of administering several high-profile ransomware groups. Volodymyr Viktorovich Tymoshchuk, also known by multiple aliases, now faces charges tied to his alleged role in LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim ransomware operations. Authorities said the schemes extorted over 250 U.S. companies and hundreds more globally, prompting Tymoshchuk indicted in global ransomware efforts.

From December 2018 to October 2021, Tymoshchuk and his co-conspirators targeted victims in the U.S. and Europe, encrypting networks and demanding ransoms in exchange for decryption tools. Prosecutors said Tymoshchuk indicted in global attacks, also acted as a Nefilim administrator, supplying ransomware to affiliates for a 20% cut. Law enforcement, led by the FBI and international partners, disrupted many attacks and released decryption keys in 2022. The State Department has offered up to $11 million for information on Tymoshchuk and his associates.
