Telefónica Update Triggers Telecom Outage Across Spain
Telecommunications services across Spain suffered a widespread outage on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, following a scheduled network update by Telefónica that triggered a cascading failure across multiple carriers. Fixed-line and mobile services were disrupted nationwide, with Madrid, Barcelona and other urban centers reporting significant connectivity issues.
Major providers including Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Digimobil and O2 experienced service failures, with users unable to place calls or access the internet. The disruption also impacted critical infrastructure, rendering the 112 emergency number unreachable in regions such as Extremadura, Aragón, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community. Authorities activated alternative contact numbers to maintain emergency response.
Vodafone deployed backup systems and reduced operations to prioritize essential communications. Telefónica confirmed the outage and said teams are working to restore service. The incident follows a major power outage in April, raising fresh concerns over the resilience of Spain’s telecommunications infrastructure. Authorities urged users to limit data usage to prevent further strain.
