SK Telecom Hack Exposes 27 Million SIM Records
SK Telecom, one of South Korea’s largest telecommunications providers, suffered a major data breach exposing nearly 26.69 million international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) records, according to a disclosure by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The breach, first reported last month, has raised concerns over the security of mobile communications and subscriber data in the country, The Korean Herald reported.
IMSI numbers are unique identifiers linked to individual SIM cards and are essential for authenticating users on mobile networks. The compromised data could potentially be exploited for unauthorized network access, location tracking, or other malicious activities.
The Ministry has not disclosed further technical details of the breach or identified the source of the intrusion. SK Telecom has yet to confirm how the breach occurred or what mitigation steps are being taken. Government authorities are reportedly continuing their investigation into the incident and assessing its broader impact on national telecom infrastructure.
