Python Turns Down $1.5 Million U.S. Grant Over Ethics

The Python Software Foundation has withdrawn a $1.5 million grant proposal to the U.S. National Science Foundation, citing ethical concerns over the funding terms. The decision, in which Python turns down 15 million in government support, centers on conditions that the foundation believes would compromise its principles on diversity, equity and inclusion.

According to the organization, the grant’s stipulations could have limited its ability to uphold its core ethical commitments. The PSF emphasized that its community standards remain non-negotiable, even in the face of significant financial backing. The foundation said that accepting the funds would have conflicted with its mission to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment.

This marks a rare instance where a major open-source organization has declined federal support over ethical grounds. Python turns down 15 million not out of financial strategy, but to preserve its values amid growing scrutiny of public funding conditions.
