Ofcom Probes X Over Nonconsensual Deepfakes
British communications regulator Ofcom has launched an inquiry into social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, over alleged failures to curb the spread of nonconsensual deepfake pornography involving both adults and minors. The move comes as Ofcom probes X under its new online safety powers, marking one of the first high-profile cases to test the UK’s updated regulations for tech platforms.
Ofcom emphasized that while it is not a government censor, it has a duty to ensure online platforms take appropriate steps to protect users from harmful content. The investigation will assess whether X’s systems and policies adequately prevent intimate, manipulated images from circulating without consent.
The probe signals growing regulatory pressure on digital companies to act against the rise of AI-generated exploitative content. If Ofcom determines violations occurred, the platform could face enforcement actions.
