Meta Wins Irish Approval for EU AI Training Plans
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has approved Meta’s plans to use data from European Union users to train its artificial intelligence systems, clearing a regulatory hurdle for the tech giant. The decision marks a significant step forward in Meta’s ambitions to develop AI capabilities using data sourced from its platforms across the EU.
However, the approval may not signal the end of regulatory scrutiny. A separate legal case currently underway in Germany could still pose a threat to Meta’s broader AI training strategy in the region. Data privacy advocacy group noyb told The Register that the battle over user data rights is far from resolved.
While the DPC’s decision offers Meta some breathing room, ongoing legal challenges suggest the company’s AI roadmap in the EU remains uncertain. Privacy advocates continue to raise concerns about how personal data is used in AI development, signaling that regulatory resistance may persist despite Ireland’s green light.
