Job Scams Surge as Hackers Impersonate Firms, Nations

Cybercriminals are intensifying efforts to exploit vulnerable job seekers through a wave of sophisticated recruitment scams, according to new research by Netcraft. Three distinct threat actors have been identified targeting individuals globally using advanced social engineering tactics that mimic legitimate hiring processes.

One group impersonates tech companies to carry out advance fee fraud, while another targets 18 countries by posing as a logistics recruiter. A third actor falsely represents the Government of Singapore to steal national IDs and compromise Telegram accounts.

The most prolific campaign, dubbed the Celadon/Softserv operation, initiates contact via messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Victims are lured into registering on deceptive sites, often featuring familiar app icons and offering inflated pay for simple tasks. These platforms require cryptocurrency deposits to proceed and use registration codes to evade detection.

Losses from job-related scams in the U.S. surged past $500 million in 2023, more than doubling from the previous year, reflecting the schemes’ growing sophistication.
