Italian Police Bust Romanian Ransomware Crime Ring
Italian authorities have dismantled a Romanian cybercrime group accused of launching ransomware attacks on nonprofit organizations and film production companies, according to a statement from Italy’s Postal and Cybersecurity Police. The operation, described as an Italian Police bust of Romanian ransomware actors, targeted a group known as “Diskstation,” which allegedly encrypted victims’ systems and demanded significant cryptocurrency payments to restore access.
Investigators said the group disrupted operations at multiple organizations by locking critical data and issuing ransom demands. The gang reportedly used sophisticated encryption methods to block system access, pressuring victims into paying large sums in digital currencies. Authorities did not disclose the total number of affected entities or the value of the ransoms demanded.
The Italian Police bust of Romanian ransomware suspects shows a strengthened push by law enforcement to combat international cyber threats. Officials emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation in tracking and dismantling such groups.
