INTERPOL Warns Africa Faces Surge in Cyber Attacks
Cybercrime now accounts for over 30% of all reported crimes in Western and Eastern Africa, according to INTERPOL’s 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report. The report, titled “INTERPOL Warns Africa Cyber,” highlights a dramatic shift in the region’s threat landscape, with two-thirds of African nations reporting cyber-related offenses as a medium-to-high proportion of total criminal activity.
The surge in attacks—ranging from online scams to ransomware and digital extortion—reflects the growing maturity of criminal networks. INTERPOL Warns Africa Cyber of increasingly sophisticated operations that exploit weak cybersecurity systems and rising internet access across the continent.
Ransomware incidents have spiked, especially in South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria and Kenya. Attackers are focusing on government agencies and critical infrastructure, using advanced techniques like “living-off-the-land” persistence and AI-driven fraud to evade detection.
INTERPOL and AFRIPOL urge coordinated international action to strengthen law enforcement capabilities and protect Africa’s digital economies.
