Instantel Devices Exposed to Hack Risk, Researcher Says

More than 1,000 industrial monitoring devices manufactured by Instantel may be vulnerable to cyberattacks following the discovery of a critical command execution flaw in the company’s Micromate units. The flaw, identified by a researcher, could allow an attacker to gain unauthorized control of the devices, potentially disrupting their operation or accessing sensitive environmental data.

The Micromate units are commonly deployed in industrial settings to monitor vibrations, noise, and other environmental parameters. The vulnerability raises concerns about the security of data collected and the integrity of operations relying on these devices.

Security experts warn that industrial systems, often lacking robust cyber defenses, present attractive targets for malicious actors. The exposure of Instantel’s devices adds to a growing list of industrial equipment found to be susceptible to hacking.

Instantel has not commented publicly on the issue, and it remains unclear whether a patch or mitigation strategy has been released to address the vulnerability.
