ICO Warns on Poor Agentic AI in Public Sector

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) warns that poorly developed agentic AI applications in government could result in flawed decision-making and reduced public trust. The regulator raised concerns about the use of automated systems that act independently, especially without clear oversight or accountability in the public sector. In response, the ICO plans to open a consultation in 2026 focused on draft guidance for the ethical deployment of automated decision-making technologies.

Agentic AI refers to systems capable of performing tasks without continuous human input. While such tools offer efficiency, the ICO emphasizes the importance of aligning these technologies with data protection laws and transparency standards. The consultation aims to establish a clear framework to ensure responsible use and to prevent harm that could arise from unreliable or opaque algorithms.

As the ICO warns about unintended consequences from unchecked AI use, public sector organizations are urged to follow forthcoming guidelines closely.
