HTTPBot Botnet Hits Gaming, Tech Sectors in China

A newly identified Windows-based botnet malware dubbed HTTPBot has launched a wave of cyberattacks targeting organizations in China’s gaming, technology, and education sectors, according to a report from The Hacker News. The intrusions, which have been steadily increasing over the past several months, have totaled at least 200 confirmed incidents since April.

The HTTPBot malware, which enables remote command execution and data exfiltration, has been used to compromise systems across multiple industries, raising concerns about its potential to disrupt digital infrastructure and business operations.

The surge in HTTPBot activity underscores the growing threat posed by evolving botnet campaigns, particularly against sectors with rich data assets and high user engagement. While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, the frequency and scope of the attacks highlight the need for heightened cybersecurity measures.

The incidents suggest an ongoing campaign of targeted attacks, with China-based organizations bearing the brunt of the malware’s current deployment.
