GAO Faults DHS Cyber Program, Urges Security Fixes

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has identified critical shortcomings in the guidance of the Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) Program, raising concerns over the effectiveness of federal network security and data protection efforts. In a recent review, the GAO urged the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to address these gaps to better safeguard government systems against cyber threats.

The CDM Program, designed to provide federal agencies with tools to monitor and respond to cybersecurity risks, was found to lack clarity in its implementation directives. These deficiencies could hinder agencies from fully leveraging the program’s capabilities, potentially exposing sensitive information to increased risk.

The GAO’s findings underscore the need for DHS to reinforce its cybersecurity oversight and ensure that federal networks are adequately defended against evolving digital threats. The report calls for immediate action to improve program guidance and execution.
