FunkSec Ransomware Defeated as Decryptor Released
Cybersecurity researchers at Avast have released a free decryptor for the FunkSec ransomware, allowing victims to recover encrypted files without paying a ransom. Gen Digital confirmed the tool’s release after collaboration with law enforcement, marking a turning point in the fight against the malware strain. With the FunkSec ransomware defeated, the team determined the threat has been neutralized and made the decryptor publicly available.
FunkSec emerged in late 2024 and listed over 100 victims, mostly in the U.S. and India, often demanding ransoms as low as $10,000. The group blended cybercrime and hacktivism while leveraging AI tools to develop its malware. Researchers noted that many of FunkSec’s leaked datasets were recycled, casting doubt on their authenticity. FunkSec ransomware defeated public confidence by using AI to inflate its threat profile despite limited technical expertise.
Victims can download the decryptor through the No More Ransom project.
