Fake CNN, BBC News Sites Used in Global Scam Push
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered an elaborate global fraud campaign that uses fake CNN BBC News websites and other cloned pages from trusted media outlets to run investment scams. The scheme targets users across multiple countries by combining social engineering tactics with technical deception to lure victims into fraudulent platforms.
The operation begins with sponsored ads on Google and Facebook, often featuring local celebrities and promises of passive income. These links redirect users to fake CNN BBC News articles hosted on thousands of imitation domains. Analysts from Malwarebytes identified over 17,000 such sites operating in 50 countries, with the U.S. as a key target.
Threat actors rely on typosquatting and low-cost domain extensions such as .xyz, .io, and .shop to replicate legitimate news sites. The fake platforms—Eclipse Earn, Solara Vynex, and Trap10—offer convincingly designed interfaces that simulate real investment environments.
