European Commission Contains Mobile-Device Breach

The European Commission swiftly contained a cyberattack on January 30 after detecting unauthorized access to staff mobile data, marking a limited but targeted European Commission mobile breach. Telemetry tools flagged suspicious activity within the infrastructure managing mobile devices, prompting immediate response from security teams. Forensics confirmed no mobile endpoints were compromised, with the breach restricted to the management layer, likely part of the institution’s MDM or UEM environment.

CERT-EU led containment operations, isolating affected systems and restoring services within nine hours. Analysts found no signs of lateral movement beyond the initial system. The Commission has launched a post-incident review to assess vectors and strengthen defenses.

The incident came shortly after the January 2026 rollout of the Cybersecurity Act 2.0 and new EU governance measures, which include supply chain protections and emergency coordination protocols.
