EDRi Urges EU to Halt Digital Deportation Measures

European Digital Rights (EDRi) is calling on the European Union to halt the digitalisation of its deportation system, citing serious concerns about surveillance and human rights. EDRi urges the EU halt the advancement of the Commission’s proposed Return Regulation, which the group says would entrench digital tools in deportation processes and increase the risk of rights violations.

The organization is part of the Protect Not Surveil coalition, which is demanding the complete withdrawal of the EU’s proposal. Coalition members argue that relying on digital technologies in deportation practices may lead to profiling, discrimination and reduced transparency in how personal data is used and stored.

EDRi urges the EU halt the regulation before it becomes law, warning that its implementation could normalize invasive surveillance under the guise of migration management. The group continues to push for policies that prioritize privacy, dignity and fundamental rights over control and enforcement.

The EU must stop the digitalisation of the deportation regime and withdraw the new Return Regulation
