A cybercrime group resembling a typhoon in reach and disruption has constructed a network of more than 1,000 compromised devices, according to a new report. The attackers, identified as Chinese hackers, forged an apparently legitimate TLS certificate claiming to be signed by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), in an effort to disguise malicious traffic. The network, built from hijacked home devices, has been leveraged to strike critical infrastructure targets.

Investigators revealed that the attackers exploited consumer electronics to establish a resilient botnet capable of launching sophisticated campaigns. The forged LAPD certificate allowed the traffic to evade detection and filter through security layers.
