Brazil IT Worker Held in $100 Million PIX Cyber Heist

Brazilian authorities arrested a Brazil IT worker held responsible for facilitating a $100 million heist targeting the PIX instant payment system. João Roque, 48, an IT employee at C&M, allegedly sold system access for roughly R$15,000 and helped hackers execute fraudulent transactions affecting at least six financial institutions.

Police detained Roque in São Paulo’s Jaraguá district. According to investigators, he received R$5,000 for his password and R$10,000 for helping develop a tool to divert funds. The Brazil IT worker held his role at C&M despite having more experience as an electrician and cable technician, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Authorities said hackers executed the scheme overnight using fake PIX transactions. The Central Bank of Brazil suspended part of C&M’s operations, while police froze R$270 million and continue searching for additional suspects. C&M stated it is cooperating fully and traced the breach to social engineering rather than tech flaws.
