BaitTrap Uncovers 17,000 Fake News Sites in Scam

Cybersecurity firm CTM360 has uncovered a global online fraud operation involving more than 17,000 fake news websites impersonating well-known media outlets. The campaign, dubbed “BaitTrap Uncovers 17000 Fake,” spans at least 50 countries and uses deceptive pages that mimic platforms like CNN, BBC and CNBC to lure victims into fraudulent investment schemes.

These fake sites, referred to as Baiting News Sites (BNS), publish fabricated stories featuring public figures, financial institutions, and central banks. The goal is to build false credibility and trick users into transferring money under the pretense of investing. CTM360’s report highlights the scale and sophistication of this digital fraud network.

The operation, detailed in the BaitTrap Uncovers 17000 Fake report, marks one of the most extensive campaigns of its kind, showcasing how cybercriminals continue to exploit trust in media brands.
