Apple, Google Host VPN Apps Tied to China Threat
Google and Apple continue to host free VPN apps tied to Chinese companies in their app stores, according to findings by the Tech Transparency Project. The group’s report warns that these apps pose serious risks to U.S. data privacy and national security, especially given their widespread availability and user base. Despite earlier disclosures revealing that more than 20% of VPN apps in the U.S. are linked to China, the platforms have not removed them.
The Tech Transparency Project highlighted that months after its initial warning, the companies still allow these apps to operate freely. Apple and Google host VPN services that may enable foreign entities to access sensitive user data, raising concerns among cybersecurity experts. These apps, often marketed as free tools to protect online activity, may instead expose users to surveillance and data harvesting.
